* Subpar permeability.
* High maintenance.
The 3M Filtrete MPR 2200 Ultrafine Particle Reduction Air Filter is a 1-inch deep pleated filter. The 20″x25″x1 version we tested contained 62 pleats. As of the writing of this review, this is perhaps Filtrete’s highest performer in the 1-inch deep category. It fits most filter slots and housings, and while it can’t compete with some deeper filters, for what it is (a 1-inch deep filter), it offers best-in-class filtration performance.
The biggest issue with this filter is that it’s rated at a Filtest permeability score of 4.2 (higher means better). That’s really high. Actually, the Filtrete MPR 2200 is rated at more than three and a half resistance (in wc) of other filters with better filtration efficiency in the deeper category. That amount of strain on your blower fan would certainly increase your heater (or AC’s) operating cost, shorten the life of your equipment, or just break it.
As with other filters in the 1-inch deep category, this filter requires frequent replacements. Perhaps more so with this model due to its fibers’ small diameter. We recommend replacing it every 2-3 months for most homes (unless you want your ac coil to turn into a block of ice).
So let’s talk about the MPR 2200 Ultrafine’s performance in the filtration department. It is quite good at the sub-micron range (82.8% @ 0.3-1µm) and excellent performance at the 1-3µm level (95%). Also, a well-earned A+ at the 3-10µm level (98.9%). Please note that Fltest.org does not incorporate this category (3-10µm) into our total score weight.
